The Reviews Are In: Turnbull Shines In Vinous’ Annual Report

Posted: March 27, 2018

Renowned wine critic Antonio Galloni recently published Part Three of his Vinous Napa Valley Cabernet Report, and we are just delighted with his reviews of our 2015 vintage wines.

From the reviewer known to be more conservative with his scoring, Galloni sings his utmost praise:

“This is a fabulous set of wines from Turnbull. Under the direction of winemaker Peter Heitz, Turnbull has been on quite a run over the last few years. The 2015s are absolutely gorgeous. Readers should expect modern, racy Cabernets that deliver serious intensity without being overdone.”

We are proud to see such distinction and consistency reflected across his reviews – qualities we’ve always known to be true in our wines.

As we prepare for the release of our 2015 Pierra and Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons (details on their release dates listed below), we invite you to visit our store to learn more about these pre-release beauties, and to stock up on the ‘15’s currently available (can anyone say Black Label?).

Praise From Vinous On Our ’15 Vintage Wines

2015 Turnbull Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Pierra  – 96+ points

“The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Pierra emerges from a single block within the Leopoldina vineyard. Rich and sumptuous, yet with striking freshness, the 2015 is absolutely compelling. Beams of salinity and minerality give the red-toned fruit unmistakable energy and vibrancy. Floral notes develop later, adding aromatic lift and striking perfume.”

2015 Turnbull Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Black Label –  95 points

“One of the many highlights in this lineup, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Black Label is a fabulous, full-throttle wine loaded with personality. Ample and luscious to its core, the Black Label is also one of the more extroverted wines in the Turnbull range. A rush of black cherry, plum, licorice, menthol and cloves add to a distinctly sepia-toned expression of Cabernet Sauvignon. Most of this fruit comes from the Leopoldina vineyard.”

2015 Turnbull Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Fortuna Vineyard – 95 points

“The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Fortuna is one of the more reticent wines in this range. In this tasting, the Fortuna is quite dense and brooding, with less of the sheer appeal and opulence found in some of the other wines in this range. There is no shortage of punch or muscle, that much is obvious. The Fortuna is less showy than the other 2015s in the range, so readers should be prepared to cellar it for at least a few years.

2015 Turnbull Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Amoenus Vineyard – 95+ points

“The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Amoenus from Turnbull’s estate vineyard in Calistoga, is fabulous. Exuberant fruit and striking mid-palate richness give the wine much of its immediacy and sheer appeal. Today, the 2015 is naturally very primary, but it is both hugely delicious and promising. Lavender, licorice, black cherry, crème de cassis and plum explode onto the dramatic, baritone-inflected finish. What a gorgeous wine this is”

2015 Turnbull Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Leopoldina Vineyard – 95 points

“The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Leopoldina is rich, luscious and super-inviting. Voluptuous, racy fruit and silky tannins add to the wine’s considerable appeal. The open, radiant personality of this site in the eastern hills of Oakville comes through loud and clear. There is so much to like in this sensual, inviting Cabernet from Turnbull. Super-ripe red cherry, pomegranate, cedar, espresso and floral notes give the wine a very distinctive aromatic signature that plays off the intense fruit very nicely.”

2015 Turnbull Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Reserve – 92 points

“The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Reserve is a blend of fruit from the Fortuna and Leopoldina (Weitz) vineyards. Supple, pliant and inviting, the Reserve is a gorgeous wine for drinking now and over the next handful of years. Succulent dark cherry, mocha, new leather, spice, menthol and dark spice add nuance to the voluptuous, racy finish. This is another striking wine from Turnbull.”
