We’re in the Vinous Napa Valley Report

Posted: January 17, 2017

Vinous is the website headed up by wine critic Antonio Galloni. It’s been a well-referenced resource for us and wine connoisseurs alike. For the first time, Turnbull was included in his annual Napa Valley report, and we were excited to get his take on our wines. Mr. Galloni says of the wines:

“A terrific set of wines from Turnbull and winemaker Peter Heitz. Turnbull has really stepped it up in recent years, which is great to see, as the family owns a number of choice vineyards. Heitz makes the wines in a rich, sumptuous style that offers notable intensity while maintaining plenty of site specificity and avoiding excess.”

Turnbull Wine Cellars 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Black Label
“The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Black Label emerges mostly from blocks within the family’s Oakville vineyards, plus a dollop of fruit from Calistoga. Today, the 2014 is dense, super-ripe and explosive, yet I also get the sense it is holding quite a bit back. A host of black cherry, plum, violet, licorice and lavender notes build into the deeply resonant finish.” – AG

Turnbull Wine Cellars 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Pierra
“The top of the line 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Pierra emerges from a single parcel within the Weitz vineyard. Rich, powerful and voluptuous, the 2013 possesses terrific depth, richness and intensity. This is another 2013 that will drink well with minimal cellaring. New leather, tobacco, menthol and licorice infuse the striking, nuanced finish.” – AG

Turnbull Wine Cellars 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Leopoldina
“The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Leopoldina is a big, heady wine endowed with serious personality and depth. Macerated cherry, plum, spice, licorice, menthol and crushed rocks infuse this super-expressive, flamboyant Cabernet Sauvignon. Leopoldina is an alternate name Turnbull uses for their Weitz vineyard on the eastern side of Oakville.” – AG

Turnbull Wine Cellars 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Fortuna
“The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Fortuna is lifted, silky and nicely textured, with lovely red fruit, bright floral notes and terrific overall balance. This is a decidedly gracious, feminine style. All the elements fuse together in a supple, open-knit Cabernet Sauvignon that can be enjoyed now or cellared. This is an especially delicate, silky Cabernet Sauvignon.” – AG

Turnbull Wine Cellars 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Fortuna
“The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Fortuna is a bit darker and fleshier than the 2013 tasted alongside it. Dark cherry, plum, menthol, licorice, spice and violet all meld together in an effortless, silky Cabernet Sauvignon endowed with real depth. This is a very strong showing. Best of all, the 2014 should drink well with minimal cellaring.” – AG

Turnbull Wine Cellars 2014 Cabernet Franc Estate Leopoldina
“Bright red fruit, wild flowers, mint and bright saline notes are nicely pushed forward in Turnbull’s 2014 Cabernet Franc Leopoldina. A wine of restraint and finesse. The 2014 stands out for its energy and tension. Overall, this is an understated wine for this sector of Oakville. Leopoldina is an alternate name Turnbull uses for their Weitz vineyard on the eastern side of Oakville.” – AG
